NATIONAL KART RACING ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIP 2022 – GRANDE FINAL
06.09.22FOREST EDGE CIRCUIT – 4th SEPTEMBER
CADET HONDA
Devon Giles kept it together throughout the day, ensuring his overall victory in the Grande Finals.
JUNIOR BLUE
In the Junior BLUE class anyone in the first three from the Regionals could have taken the ‘crown’. In the end it was the experience of the current No.1 Sam Mitchell who from opposite pole went through to take the Flag. The story didn’t end there though, 2nd overall was Jamie Bradfield with Rhys Read 3rd . These three could be covered by a blanket as they went over the line. Fastest in the Final was the 3rd placed youngster Rhys Read, who on several occasions in the 14 lap race was inside the 2nd place driver only to have the door firmly slammed shut on him. Had he cleared the 2nd place hurdle then the race for 1st place would, no doubt, have been even more electric than it was.
FORMULA BLUE
In the Formula BLUE Class, the opening lap saw a ‘rash’ move by Stuart Gray which caused a multiple pile-up which affected one-third of the grid, with several drivers either retiring damaged or limping on in an effort to score points. Gray was given a time penalty for the incident after the race end.
Anthony Cleal got through a gap in the mayhem and held the lead up to lap 10, at which point, knowing that the 2nd and 3rd drivers could not affect his overall position in the Final, he moved over to allow Gray and David Watts go past. He then adjusted his carburetor to richen up the petroil mixture and continued to race on their tails. Rich Puddle and Mike Bell became the chasing pair with Bell snatching 4th place on the last bend before the line. Alex Fortune, having started on grid 12 had, throughout the weekend fine-tuned his new MAC ’22 Kart to the degree where he achieved 6th place at the chequered flag.
Following post-race scrutineering, Puddle was excluded for a non-registered engine, moving everyone from 8th position onwards up a place. Gray and Watts were given a 5 second time penalty for dislodged front fairings, as were four others as a consequence to the opening lap collisions. Gray was also given a further penalty for the earlier first lap incident. Robin Stoddart-Stones also received a time penalty for contact, which resulted in the untimely retirement from the race of Nigel Vickery. The end results then read Cleal 1st, Bell 2nd, Watts 3rd, Gray 4th and Fortune 5th.
Once the dust had settled on the race outcome the points were added to the Regional ones to give the overall NKRA Champions for 2022. In 1st Place with 4 points sat Anthony Cleal, 2nd Place with 7 points Dave Watts and 3rd Place with 12 points was Mike Bell. Steve Groves snatched 4th place by 1 point from Stuart Gray who finished in 5th position.
